Moody Center Bag Policy: What You Can Bring (2026)
Moody Center in Austin, Texas allows one clear bag no larger than 14 inches by 14 inches by 6 inches. The bag must be clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC. A one-gallon clear resealable plastic storage bag also works. A non-clear clutch, purse, or wallet is allowed only if it does not exceed 5 inches by 9 inches by 1.5 inches.
Three Austin Venues Share the Name Moody. Only One Is This Arena.
Three separate Austin venues carry the "Moody" name, and mixing them up is the single biggest source of bad information about this topic.
Moody Center ATX at 2001 Robert Dedman Drive is the arena this article covers. It is operated by Oak View Group and sits on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. The arena opened in April 2022, seats more than 15,000 for concerts, and reconfigures to a 10,000-seat layout for UT Longhorns basketball games. ACL Live at The Moody Theater is a separate, smaller downtown venue at 310 W. Willie Nelson Blvd, inside the W Austin building, with 2,750 seats. Oak View Group does not operate it. ACL Live publishes no clear-bag dimension at all. Its official policy states that bags and backpacks over 11 inches by 17 inches are not allowed, and diaper and medical bags go through inspection rather than a decanting rule.
Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Park is a separate outdoor venue run by C3 Presents and Waterloo Greenway. Unlike Moody Center, it allows one factory-sealed water bottle or one empty plastic bottle to refill inside. Metal bottles are not permitted there.

What Size Bag Can You Bring Into Moody Center?
The largest clear bag you can carry into Moody Center measures 14 inches by 14 inches by 6 inches. The material must be clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC.
Moody Center's own guidance leads with a request that guests not bring a bag at all if they can avoid it. For guests who need one, these are the permitted formats.

Some third-party sites list 12 by 6 by 12 inches for the clear bag and 4.5 by 6.5 inches for the clutch. Those numbers belong to other venues and other sports leagues. They match the standard NFL and MLB clear-bag template, and they line up almost exactly with the policy at MLB's Chase Field. They are not Moody Center's figures. The arena's published limits are 14 by 14 by 6 inches for a clear bag and 5 by 9 by 1.5 inches for a clutch.
Moody Center Purse, Clutch, and Wallet Policy
A non-clear purse, clutch, or wallet can enter Moody Center only if it measures no more than 5 inches by 9 inches by 1.5 inches.
That is the only non-clear option at the arena. A standard-size handbag does not qualify, and neither does a larger clutch. The venue asks guests to leave bags at home when possible, then grants this small clutch allowance to anyone who still needs to carry essentials. Moody Center's clutch bag policy applies the same way at every event.

Are Backpacks Allowed at Moody Center?
No. Backpacks are not allowed at Moody Center.
That ban covers standard backpacks and clear backpacks alike. A clear backpack does not satisfy the policy, because the permitted category is a clear bag, not a pack with straps. Any bag or pack that fails to meet the clear-bag or clutch criteria is prohibited, and that includes backpacks of every style.
What Other Bags Are Not Allowed?
Grocery totes, mesh or straw bags, duffle bags, camera cases, and binocular cases are all prohibited at Moody Center. Diaper bags are also not allowed as-is.
The official diaper bag rule requires a transfer. Items normally carried in a diaper bag, such as formula, wipes, diapers, and pacifiers, must be moved into a clear plastic bag before entry. The diaper bag itself stays behind.
Binoculars are allowed, subject to inspection at the gate. A binocular case is not allowed.

Moody Center bans the following items in addition to non-compliant bags:
- Weapons of any kind: guns, whether real, toy, or replica; knives of any size; brass knuckles; martial-arts weapons; stun guns and tasers; mace and pepper spray

- Cigarettes, tobacco products, vapes and e-cigarettes, and drugs, including marijuana and THC. The University of Texas at Austin campus is tobacco-free, and vape use on-site can mean confiscation or ejection
- Animals, other than ADA service animals
- Noisemakers: whistles, air horns, vuvuzelas, and similar items
- Banners, flags, flag poles, and signs
- Bottles or cans of any kind, shape, size, or material, empty or full
- Recording equipment beyond a smartphone: professional cameras and any camera with a detachable lens, unless the holder is credentialed
- Distracting or dangerous items: frisbees, balloons, beach balls, inflatables, laser pointers, light sticks, flashlights, and projectiles
- Drones and other unmanned aircraft
- Explosives and fireworks
- Food or beverages of any kind, except snacks needed for medical purposes
- Hazardous materials: fuels, chemicals, aerosols, and unapproved battery packs
- Laptops and tablets, except for credentialed staff, team, league, or media personnel
- Packages or parcels
- Selfie sticks and telescopic devices: tripods, bipods, monopods, and camera poles
- Sporting equipment
- Strollers and wagons
- Tools, razor blades, box cutters, and scissors
- Umbrellas
Can You Bring a Water Bottle Into Moody Center?
No. Moody Center bans bottles and cans of any kind, shape, or size, regardless of material, and regardless of whether they are empty or full.
The rule is a full ban. An empty reusable bottle does not qualify, so a Stanley, Hydro Flask, Yeti, or Nalgene bottle stays outside along with everything else. Beverages are sold at concession stands inside the arena. Moody Center is fully cashless and accepts Apple Pay, Google Pay, and major credit cards for every purchase, including food, parking, and merchandise. A Reverse ATM near the Box Office on the Main Concourse converts cash into a prepaid card for guests who need one. Moody Center does not publish a public-facing water-refill station program for the arena.
Medical Bags and Accessibility at Moody Center
Snacks needed for medical purposes, such as items used for glucose management, are exempt from the food and beverage ban at Moody Center.
Moody Center does not publish a separate size exemption for medical bags. Medically necessary items go through screening at the gate, and guests should expect staff to inspect those items on entry.
Several accessibility services are available at the arena:
ADA entrance. The accessible entrance is West Gate A at Dell Technologies Plaza, near the UT Team Store off Robert Dedman Drive. Both the official Accessibility Guide and the A-Z Guide name West Gate A.
Assistive Listening Devices. These are free and are checked out at the Guest Services booth on the Main Concourse.
Wheelchair assistance. Guests can request a wheelchair transport from the entry doors to their seat. They can also text "Moody" to 69050 at the Accessibility Drop-Off. Venue wheelchairs cannot stay with the guest during the event.
Sensory and family accommodations. Moody Center partners with KultureCity on a Sensory Pod near Portal 5. The arena offers free sensory bags, single-occupancy and family restrooms, and a nursing pod between portals 9 and 10. ASL interpreting can be arranged with 14 business days' notice.
Does the Bag Policy Change for Concerts, Longhorns Games, or a Specific Artist?
No. The same bag policy applies at every ticketed event at Moody Center.
That holds for concerts, UT Longhorns men's and women's basketball games, and any other ticketed event on the calendar. Moody Center does not change its bag rules by performer, and a clear bag that works for one show works for the next one.
A specific one-off event can occasionally receive a temporary variance from the venue. A 2025 esports tournament at the arena briefly allowed small event-related signs, for example. That was a narrow, event-specific exception and not a rule guests should expect at other events.
Why Moody Center Uses AI Security Screening Instead of Metal Detectors
Oak View Group, which operates Moody Center, deployed Xtract One Technologies' AI-powered SmartGateway system at the arena's entrances instead of traditional metal detectors.
The original plan called for 42 traditional walk-through metal detectors and 84 security staff to run them. The venue instead installed 9 SmartGateway lanes staffed by 27 people. That is roughly a quarter of the planned lanes and about a third of the planned staffing.
The throughput figures are the reason. During a Harry Styles concert, 8 SmartGateway lanes processed more than 10,000 patrons in under 23 minutes.
Xtract One states that Moody Center saves more than $700,000 annually in operational costs from the switch. One analyst estimate puts the savings closer to $1 million.
The venue's own guest-facing guide describes these entrances to fans simply as "metal detectors." Moody Center does not market the Xtract One name to the public. The branding and the technical detail live in industry press coverage. What guests experience at the door is a faster-moving line than a traditional metal-detector setup would produce.
