Stadium bag policy guide comparing ballparks, arenas and soccer stadiums, with a bag diagram showing size limits from 4 × 6 × 1.5 to 14 × 14 × 6 inches.

Stadium Bag Policy Guide: Ballparks, Arenas & Soccer Stadiums

The stadium bag policy you’ll face depends on the venue, not the sport. Of the 8 venues in this guide, 5 require clear bags and 3 don’t, and the largest bag allowed ranges from 4 x 6 x 1.5 inches at Little Caesars Arena to 14 x 14 x 6 inches at Moody Center.

Stadium bag rules at a glance:

  • Clear bags required: 5 of 8 venues
  • Smallest limit: 4 x 6 x 1.5 inches (Little Caesars Arena)
  • Largest limit: 14 x 14 x 6 inches (Moody Center)
  • Backpacks: not allowed at Dodger Stadium, Chase Field, Chase Center or Bridgestone Arena

In this guide:

What is a clear bag policy?

A clear bag policy is a venue rule that limits the bags fans can bring inside, usually to one transparent plastic, vinyl or PVC bag within set dimensions, plus a small clutch. Venues tie these rules to safety and faster entry: Bridgestone Arena’s policy, for example, cites “enhanced safety and speed of entry.”

The NFL’s version is the one most fans know. It allows a clear bag up to 12 x 6 x 12 inches, a one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag and a small bag up to 4.5 x 6.5 inches. Not every venue follows that model. Chase Center and Bridgestone Arena limit bag size without requiring clear material, and Little Caesars Arena allows only bags up to 4 x 6 x 1.5 inches.

Stadium bag policy rules that change by venue type

A stadium bag policy depends on the venue and event. NFL games have a published league policy, while the ballparks, arenas and soccer stadium in this guide publish their own requirements. Check four things: whether the bag must be clear, its maximum dimensions, any small-bag exception and restrictions on compartments or backpacks.

Bag rules by venue type: ballparks require clear bags up to 12 x 12 x 6 inches, arenas range from 4 x 6 x 1.5 to 14 x 14 x 6 inches, and BMO Stadium allows only clear bags

Venue Venue type Clear bag required? Largest bag allowed
Dodger Stadium Ballpark Yes, clear plastic (plus a small non-clear wristlet or clutch) 12 x 12 x 6 inches
Petco Park Ballpark Yes, single-compartment clear plastic 12 x 6 x 12 inches
Chase Field Ballpark Yes, clear plastic, vinyl or PVC 12 x 6 x 12 inches
Chase Center Arena No 14 x 6 x 14 inches
Bridgestone Arena Arena No 12 x 12 x 6 inches
Little Caesars Arena Arena No (very small bags only, clear or not) 4 x 6 x 1.5 inches
Moody Center Arena Yes, clear plastic (plus a small non-clear clutch or wallet) 14 x 14 x 6 inches
BMO Stadium Soccer stadium Yes, clear plastic, vinyl or PVC (no non-clear clutches) 12 x 6 x 12 inches, or a one-gallon clear bag

These are general-entry limits; medical and parenting exceptions can differ. Dimensions retain each source’s order. Compare width, height and depth: 12 x 6 x 12 and 12 x 12 x 6 describe the same box dimensions when the axes are aligned.

The clearest warning is Little Caesars Arena: a clear tote that meets a ballpark’s measurements can still exceed its very small bag limit. Use the clear bag size guide if you need help comparing measurements.

Stadium bag size: the most common limits

The most common stadium bag size in this guide is 12 x 6 x 12 inches, or 12 x 12 x 6 inches, which is the same box turned on its side. Five of the 8 venues use it, and so does the NFL. The other limits run from very small bags to 14-inch clear totes.

Stadium bag size limits at 8 venues, from 4 x 6 x 1.5 inches at Little Caesars Arena to 14 x 14 x 6 inches at Moody Center

  • 12 x 6 x 12 or 12 x 12 x 6 inches: Dodger Stadium, Petco Park, Chase Field, Bridgestone Arena, BMO Stadium and NFL games.
  • 14 x 6 x 14 or 14 x 14 x 6 inches: Chase Center and Moody Center.
  • 4 x 6 x 1.5 inches: Little Caesars Arena.
  • One-gallon clear plastic bag: BMO Stadium, Moody Center and NFL games.
  • Small clutch: 4.5 x 6.5 inches at NFL games, 5 x 7 inches at Petco Park, 5 x 8 x 2 inches at Dodger Stadium, 6.5 x 4.5 inches at Chase Field and 5 x 9 x 1.5 inches at Moody Center.

Measure your bag when it is packed, not empty. A soft tote can bulge past its listed depth once it holds a jacket or water bottle.

Football stadiums: start with the NFL policy

For an NFL game, the published policy permits a clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag up to 12 x 6 x 12 inches, or a one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag, plus a small bag up to 4.5 x 6.5 inches. Read our NFL clear bag policy guide, then check the host stadium’s additional instructions for your game.

College football stadiums set their own rules, and many follow the NFL’s limits. Michigan State Athletics, for example, allows a clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag up to 12 x 6 x 12 inches, a one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag and a small clutch up to 4.5 x 6.5 inches at its athletic events. Check your school’s athletics site before game day, because size limits and exceptions are not the same on every campus.

Ballparks: check the bag’s compartments and clutch limit

There is no single MLB bag policy for every ballpark. Each club publishes its own rules, so a baseball stadium bag policy can look familiar at first glance and still differ in the details. The three ballparks below use comparable clear-bag dimensions, but their small-bag allowances and construction requirements differ.

Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles

For Los Angeles Dodgers games, Dodger Stadium lists clear plastic bags up to 12 x 12 x 6 inches and a separate allowance for small non-clear wristlets or clutches. Our Dodger Stadium bag policy guide explains the permitted categories and exceptions.

Petco Park, San Diego

The San Diego Padres specify a single-compartment clear plastic bag within 12 x 6 x 12 inches, so dimensions alone do not settle whether a bag fits the rule. See the Petco Park bag policy guide before choosing a tote with extra pockets.

Chase Field, Phoenix

Chase Field permits one clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag within 12 x 6 x 12 inches, with a separate small-clutch allowance for Arizona Diamondbacks fans. Use the Chase Field bag policy guide for the full restrictions.

Arenas: clear bags are not always required

An arena bag policy may allow an ordinary purse, require a clear tote or restrict you to a very small bag. For an NBA or NHL game, look up the building where you will attend; the arena examples here have different limits.

Chase Center, San Francisco

Chase Center lists a 14 x 6 x 14-inch bag limit without requiring clear material, with screening procedures that depend on bag size. Our Chase Center bag policy guide covers those requirements for Golden State Warriors fans and other visitors.

Bridgestone Arena, Nashville

Bridgestone Arena’s written rule permits bags within 12 x 12 x 6 inches without requiring them to be clear, but prohibits backpacks. Check the Bridgestone Arena bag policy guide when planning a Nashville Predators visit.

Little Caesars Arena, Detroit

Little Caesars Arena’s ordinary-bag threshold is 4 x 6 x 1.5 inches, so Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Pistons fans should check even a compact purse carefully. Read the Little Caesars Arena bag policy guide for the full wording and exceptions.

Moody Center, Austin

Moody Center specifies clear plastic bags within 14 x 14 x 6 inches and a separate allowance for small non-clear clutches or wallets. The Moody Center bag policy guide covers the details to check before packing.

Soccer stadiums: check the host venue’s policy

For Los Angeles FC matches at BMO Stadium, the published options are one clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag within 12 x 6 x 12 inches or a one-gallon clear plastic storage bag; non-clear clutches are not allowed. Open the BMO Stadium bag policy guide for the full requirements, and check the host venue’s own policy when attending an MLS match elsewhere.

Food, clutches and backpacks: rules that vary by venue

Does an allowed bag mean food and water are allowed too?

Check the contents rules separately from the bag measurements. These three venues illustrate why:

  • Petco Park: Permits one factory-sealed bottle of still, clear, unflavored water up to one liter, plus an empty reusable water bottle up to one liter with no glass.
  • Moody Center: Lists bottles and cans among prohibited items, including empty containers, and prohibits food and beverages except snacks needed for medical purposes.
  • Little Caesars Arena: Permits one factory-sealed plastic water bottle of 20 ounces or less. Its outside-food restrictions include religious, dietary and medical exceptions.

A tote’s bottle pocket describes what it can carry; the venue’s contents policy determines what you can take inside.

Can you bring a small non-clear clutch?

The answer changes by venue. Dodger Stadium lists wristlets and clutches up to 5 x 8 x 2 inches; Petco Park lists clutches and purses up to 5 x 7 inches; BMO Stadium does not allow non-clear clutches.

Compare your bag with the small bag size limits explained, then use the venue’s exact measurements.

Can you bring a backpack to a baseball game or arena?

Dodger Stadium, Chase Field and Bridgestone Arena prohibit backpacks. Chase Center names specific single-compartment exceptions, so a small size or transparent body alone does not establish permission.

Venue Small or non-clear bag Backpacks
Dodger Stadium Non-clear wristlet or clutch up to 5 x 8 x 2 inches Not allowed
Petco Park Clutch or purse up to 5 x 7 inches Not listed on the venue's bag policy page
Chase Field Clutch or wallet up to 6.5 x 4.5 inches Not allowed
Chase Center Any bag within 14 x 6 x 14 inches Not allowed, except single-compartment drawstring bags and backpack-style purses
Bridgestone Arena Any bag within 12 x 12 x 6 inches Not allowed
Little Caesars Arena Bags up to 4 x 6 x 1.5 inches Not allowed (larger than the size limit)
Moody Center Non-clear clutch or wallet up to 5 x 9 x 1.5 inches Not listed on the venue's bag policy page
BMO Stadium Non-clear bags, including clutches, not allowed Not listed on the venue's bag policy page

“Not listed” means the venue’s bag policy page doesn’t mention backpacks either way. That is not permission to bring one, so ask the venue about the exact bag type before you go.

Does a clear bag get an exception to the size limit?

Clear material does not increase the listed dimensions. Chase Center and Bridgestone Arena apply size limits even though bags do not have to be clear; Moody Center requires clear material for its larger-bag option; Little Caesars Arena still applies its very small ordinary-bag threshold to clear bags.

Some venues change rules for concerts or select events: Little Caesars Arena notes possible changes, and Chase Center directs visitors to the event page.

Medical and diaper bag exceptions

Medical and diaper bags are the most common exceptions to a stadium bag policy, but each venue handles them differently. Some allow a larger bag after screening, some keep the normal size limit, and one doesn’t allow diaper bags at all.

  • Dodger Stadium: Adult diaper bags and diaper bags that accompany infants are permitted, subject to search.
  • Petco Park: Infant and medical bags are exceptions to the clear-bag rule.
  • Chase Field: Diaper bags smaller than 11 x 11 x 15 inches are allowed after inspection. Medically necessary items may be allowed through the ADA screening lanes at Gate A or E.
  • Chase Center: Diaper bags and medical bags must still fit the 14 x 6 x 14-inch limit.
  • Bridgestone Arena: Diaper bags and bags needed for medical reasons are allowed but go through X-ray screening.
  • Little Caesars Arena: Diaper, parenting and medical bags smaller than 16 x 16 x 8 inches are permitted.
  • Moody Center: Diaper bags are not allowed. Items you would normally carry in one must go in a clear plastic bag.
  • BMO Stadium: Medically necessary items are allowed after inspection and stadium management approval.

If you need a medical exception, contact the venue before the event. Bridgestone Arena, for example, asks guests to contact its customer service 24 hours ahead to arrange accommodations.

Game day vs concerts at the same venue

A venue’s bag policy for a concert or special event can differ from its game-day rules. Petco Park says special events may require different policies and keeps a separate concert prohibited-items page. Little Caesars Arena says its policy is subject to change for select events, Chase Center tells guests to check each event’s page, and Bridgestone Arena asks guests to call 615-770-2000 for a show’s policy.

Before a concert, open the event page as well as the venue’s general bag policy, and follow the event page if the two differ.

How to check any venue’s bag policy in 30 seconds

  1. Find the exact venue. Search its name with “bag policy” and choose the venue’s or team’s own website.
  2. Open the bag and prohibited-items sections. Note the material, all dimensions, compartments, backpack wording and small-bag allowance.
  3. Check your event details. Look for a separate event notice or changes to the standard entry rules.
  4. Compare the bag you will carry. Check its outside measurements when packed, plus pockets, opaque areas and contents. Ask guest services about any point the policy leaves unclear.

You can use the Bag Size Checker alongside the venue’s posted measurements. Keep the venue page handy for construction rules and event exceptions that a dimension comparison cannot settle.

Bags that fit most of these size limits

These three clear bags have listed dimensions within the 12 x 6 x 12-inch limit used at many stadiums and within the larger 14-inch limits some arenas use. Size is only one check, so confirm material, compartment and contents rules with your venue too.

Check before you buy: none of the three is confirmed as a single-compartment bag, and all three are larger than a 4 x 6 x 1.5-inch small-bag limit.

12x12x6 bottle-holder tote

The 12x12x6 Clear Tote Bag with Bottle Holders measures 12 x 12 x 6 inches (30.5 x 30.5 x 15.2 cm) and has two mesh side pockets and a front pocket. Its black handles, edging and webbing band are not clear, so check them against a clear-only rule, and measure the width with bottles loaded.

10x10x6 tote

The 10x10x6 Clear Stadium Tote Bag is the smaller tote, at 10 x 10 x 6 inches (25.4 x 25.4 x 15.2 cm), with a zipper closure and dual handles. It fits inside every larger-bag limit in Table 1. Like the 12-inch tote, it has black trim, handles and a webbing band.

Clear crossbody with front pocket

The Clear Stadium Crossbody Bag with Front Pocket measures 8.27 x 6.5 x 3.27 inches (21.0 x 16.5 x 8.3 cm), with an adjustable, removable strap and room for a phone, wallet and keys. Its front zipper pocket is a second compartment, and it is larger than a 4.5 x 6.5-inch small-bag allowance, so it counts as a clear bag, not a clutch.

Compare more clear stadium bags and check each product’s full measurements and photos against your venue’s rules.

Stadium bag policy FAQ

Do all stadiums require clear bags?

Some venues allow non-clear bags. Chase Center allows any bag up to 14 x 6 x 14 inches, and Bridgestone Arena allows bags up to 12 x 12 x 6 inches without requiring them to be clear. Dodger Stadium, Petco Park, Chase Field and Moody Center require clear bags for anything larger than a small clutch, and BMO Stadium requires clear bags for everything.

Does MLB have a clear bag policy?

The ballparks in this guide each publish their own bag policy, so the rules differ from park to park. Dodger Stadium allows clear plastic bags up to 12 x 12 x 6 inches, while Petco Park and Chase Field allow clear bags up to 12 x 6 x 12 inches. Check the bag policy of the ballpark you are visiting before game day.

Are bags allowed in baseball stadiums?

You can bring a bag into the 3 ballparks in this guide if it meets their limits. Dodger Stadium allows clear plastic bags up to 12 x 12 x 6 inches, and Petco Park and Chase Field allow clear bags up to 12 x 6 x 12 inches. Petco Park also requires a clear bag to have a single compartment.

Can you bring a purse to a baseball game?

You can bring a small purse or clutch to the 3 ballparks in this guide if it fits their size limits. Dodger Stadium allows non-clear wristlets and clutches up to 5 x 8 x 2 inches, Petco Park allows clutches and purses up to 5 x 7 inches, and Chase Field allows a clutch or wallet up to 6.5 x 4.5 inches.

What size bag is allowed in stadiums?

The allowed bag size depends on the venue. Among the 8 venues in this guide, limits range from 4 x 6 x 1.5 inches at Little Caesars Arena to 14 x 14 x 6 inches at Moody Center. Several use 12 x 6 x 12 inches, including Petco Park, Chase Field and BMO Stadium.
